Beyond the spotlight: Stars lend a hand to Filipinos in times of disaster

Taiwanese celebrities Jerry Yan, Vanness Wu, Vic Chou, and Ashin donate P5 million for Mindanao earthquake victims

As earthquakes, floods, and tropical cyclones hit different parts of the country this year, several personalities used their resources and reach to help communities dealing with displacement and recovery.

Among the biggest celebrity-backed contributions came in June, when Taiwanese stars Jerry Yan, Vanness Wu, and Vic Chou of F4, together with Mayday frontman Ashin, donated a combined ₱5 million for victims of the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Mindanao.

Of the amount, ₱2.5 million went to GMA Kapuso Foundation’s Operation Bayanihan, while another ₱2.5 million was coursed through ABS-CBN Foundation’s Sagip Kapamilya.

Weeks later, another wave of disasters hit as the southwest monsoon and tropical cyclones Luis, Maymay, and Neneng brought heavy rains and flooding to several regions.

By Aug. 21, the combined effects of the weather disturbances had affected 6,620,335 people, or 1,905,622 families, across 10 regions, the Office of Civil Defense said. Of those, 52,543 people from 15,523 families were staying in 701 evacuation centers.

Actress and content creator Ivana Alawi joined relief efforts in Pampanga, where she helped prepare and distribute assistance to flood-affected residents. Reports also showed her giving ₱1,000 in cash aid to beneficiaries during the activity.

At the same time, Donny Pangilinan also offered assistance in Cavite by personally handing out relief packs to the people living in Barangay Acacia in Silang. His involvement gained attention when pictures and stories from the residents were shared online.

Their efforts formed part of a much broader response led by government agencies, civic groups, volunteers, and local communities.

However, for public figures, assistance can carry another layer of impact. Beyond providing immediate aid, their involvement can direct attention to communities still in need and encourage followers to contribute through relief drives and established organizations. — Angelica Villanueva
