The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Saturday reported flooding in major thoroughfares in the National Capital Region (NCR) due to continuous heavy rainfall since Friday night.

As of 10 a.m., the MMDA reported knee-deep flooding in Brgy. Zapote in Las Piñas and at the intersection of Taft Avenue and Quirino Avenue in Manila.

Gutter-deep floods were also monitored in several locations, including MacArthur Highway in front of Goodyear or Toyota in Valenzuela, the corner of Boni Avenue and F. Ortigas Street in Mandaluyong, sections of Dr. A. Santos Avenue (also known as Sucat Avenue) at Canaynay Avenue, near Olivarez School, and SM Sucat, all situated in Parañaque; as well as Sevilla Road, Gov. Pascual Avenue, M.H. Del Pilar Street, and Don Basilio Bautista in Malabon.

Although the MMDA declared the affected areas as passable, this has resulted in slow-moving traffic.

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has since instructed all relevant government agencies to take proactive measures and ensure full preparedness as numerous communities are facing the repercussions of the southwest monsoon (habagat).

The MMDA, led by General Manager Nicolas Torre III, recently held a meeting with representatives from various government agencies and local officials to tackle the waste management issues identified as a contributing factor to flooding in the NCR. — Joel E. Zurbano
