‘Life After You’ is decent family drama that deserves more

Maricel Soriano (left) and Dani Zee bring the film’s central family conflict closer to home as it examines care, responsibility, and life after loss

What happens when two women love the same child but have completely different ideas about what she needs?

That premise gives Life After You its emotional foundation. After a tragic loss, Joey (Bela Padilla) gives up her international career plans and steps up to raise her niece Denise (Dani Zee) alongside Bella (Maricel Soriano). While the setup has the makings of a moving family drama, the film ultimately settles for something more familiar and restrained.

Now showing in cinemas nationwide, the Viva Films production is directed by Marla Ancheta.

At its strongest, Life After You is a showcase for its two leading actresses. Bela Padilla proves once again that she is an intelligent actor who knows how to approach dramatic material. She is particularly effective in emotionally complicated roles, showcasing a natural quality to her performance that makes her character believable.

Padilla doesn’t have to force the drama, much of it comes through in the way she delivers her lines and responds to the people around her.

Maricel Soriano is equally convincing. After decades in the industry, Soriano has developed a recognizable screen presence that has become something of a hallmark. That familiarity works to her advantage because she remains effortlessly commanding whenever she is on screen.

But there is also a sense that Life After You doesn’t ask enough from her.

Soriano is good, certainly, but the film doesn’t necessarily reveal anything new about what she can do as an actress. There is no particularly demanding dramatic sequence that allows her to go beyond the qualities audiences already know and appreciate. In that sense, the limitation may have less to do with Soriano’s performance and more with the material itself.

Dani Zee is adequate in her role as the child caught between two women who both believe they know what is best for her. She delivers what the story requires, although she has demonstrated stronger performances in some of her previous projects.

Interestingly, it is Marlo Mortel, in a supporting role, who leaves one of the more lasting impressions. His performance gives the film an unexpected spark that proves that sometimes a supporting actor can make a stronger impact than expected.

The film’s biggest drawback is its pacing. Life After You takes its time establishing its characters and relationships, but there are stretches when the story moves too slowly. While the narrative remains cohesive and easy to follow, it doesn’t always generate the kind of tension or curiosity that keeps you fully invested.

There is nothing particularly wrong with the story. The problem is that there isn’t much that feels surprising about it, either.

The film touches on familiar Filipino realities—family obligations, sacrifice, complicated relationships, and the idea that raising a child is rarely the responsibility of just one person.

These themes give the story its heart, but the execution could have pushed them further.

Life After You is an average film—not bad, but not particularly brilliant, either.

What saves it from becoming entirely forgettable is the strength of its cast. Bela Padilla brings intelligence and emotional credibility to her role, while Maricel Soriano delivers the kind of assured performance expected from a veteran actress.

There are moments when Life After You feels like it could have been something more—a deeper, more affecting examination of family and the women who make sacrifices for it. Instead, it remains a decent, straightforward family drama. — Nickie Wang
