PH’s top surgeons to perform free simultaneous surgeries for over 200 patients nationwide

Close to 1,000 of the country’s top surgeons will render free surgery to more than 200 patients during simultaneous operations starting at 9 a.m. on Sept. 1, an advocacy the Philippine College of Surgeons (PCS) started four years ago aimed at addressing neglected or backlog surgeries for indigent patients across the Philippines.

PCS President Joselito M. Mendoza, MD, FPCS, said the advocacy will include around 150 participating hospitals in the country and thousands of medical staff.

Dr. Rouel Mateo M. Azores, PCS regent, said thyroid, Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal), inguinal hernia repair, and other index cases will go under the knife at exactly 9 a.m.

The National Surgical Outreach Day officially kicks-off the 90th anniversary of the PCS.

“We reflect with pride on our rich legacy and look forward with renewed purpose and resolve. For nine decades, PCS has stood as the home of Filipino surgeons—committed to excellence, service, and the advancement of surgical care in our country,” Mendoza said.

On Sept. 2, a Camaraderie Golf game will be held at the Camp Aguinaldo Golf Course at 6 a.m.

On Sept. 4, a scuba diving and environmental awareness activity will start at 7 a.m. at the Solana Dive Resort in Anilao, Batangas. The PCS will install a stone marker on the seabed of Balayan Bay in the Municipality of Mabini, Batangas.

“This is the PCS’s way of heeding the call for environmental conservation by way of coral regeneration and shoreline seabed cleanup to preserve our seas, bodies of water, and inclusive ecosystems,” Dr. Mendoza said.

On Sept. 9, they will form a human monogram at the helipad of the new Ospital ng Maynila.

On Sept. 11, the PCS will lead the National Stop the Bleed, a blood-letting activity, at its headquarters along EDSA in Quezon City.

On Sept. 12, the PCS Foundation will hold a gala dinner at EDSA Shangrila Hotel and the awarding ceremony for the Lifetime Achievers, Legends of the Knife, Community Service, Young Trailblazers, and Most Outstanding Residents.

The PCS is also set to unveil its 90th anniversary jubilee torch, its commemorative watch, and coffee table book “Kalayag” which is published by the Manila Bulletin. — Isabel de Leon
