‘Abangan na lang ang presscon’: Trillanes says he told prosecution to drop him as witness

Former senator Antonio “Sonny” Trillanes IV admitted that he himself asked the prosecution panel to drop him as a witness in Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial.

Trillanes released a statement to this effect on Thursday afternoon, Oct. 1, a few hours after lead prosecutor Batangas 2nd district Rep. Gerville “Jinky Bitrics” Luistro manifested before the Senate impeachment court that the ex-lawmaker would no longer be presented.

“Earlier in the day, I requested the House prosecution under Chair Jinky Luistro to formally withdraw my name as a witness for the prosecution,” Trillanes said on his social media.

“This way, the prosecution panel would be relieved from the pressure it is going through,” he said, without giving specifics.

The prosecution team had been building anticipation for the retired Navy lieutenant’s testimony for weeks.

Trillanes is a Duterte family nemesis–he is one of the few politicians who can match the family’s signature tough talk word for word.

But the developments in court Thursday doesn’t prevent Trillanes from talking.

“Having said that, magco-conduct ako ng press con bukas para ipresenta lahat ng ilalabas ko dapat sa impeachment trial,” he said.  (I will conduct a press con tomorrow to present what would have been my terminology in the impeachment trial).

This announcement was in line with the Magdalo leader’s ominous statement on X a day earlier.

“I have a lot of new heavy evidence that I will release against Sara. Let the senator-judges and the people decide whether these are significant or not,”he wrote.

No further details about the press conference has been given. — Ellson Quismorio
