Korean trot singer found dead; suicide note discovered by police

A Korean trot singer was found dead in her dorm on May 12 and the police believed she took her own life after discovering a suicide note. 

The dead singer was identified as Haesoo (real name Kim Ara), 29, who was found dead at about 10 a.m. KST on May 12 by the police in Yongsan, Seoul. They police found a suicide note presumed to be written by her, Korean media reported.

A day before her death, Haesoo even posted Instagram and thanked fans after appearing in a morning TV show in Busan, South Korea. 

“Thank you so much to our Haesoopia [Haesoo fan club] for cheering us on so that we can receive great strength. I was so happy today,” Haesoo wrote on May 11. 

Born in December 1993, Haesoo majored in Korean traditional music in college and debuted as a trot singer in 2019. 

Last January, she performed on the KBS TV show “Immortal Songs: Singing the Legend.” 

When news spread that a trot singer died on May 12, netizens posted condolence messages on her Instagram account. The comment section on her Instagram has now been disabled. 

Korean media outlet YTN reported that Haesoo was supposed to perform at an event in North Jeolla Province, South Korea on May 20. Organizers received a call about her death.

Haesoo released her first mini-album “My Life, Me” in November 2019. 

Her death came just less than a month after K-pop idol Moonbin of boy band ASTRO was found dead at his home in Gangnam, Seoul on April 19. He was 25. — Jonathan Hicap
