State of calamity up in Iloilo component city due to ‘summer’ rain

ILOILO CITY – A component city in Iloilo province has been placed under a state of calamity after intermittent rain amid the searing heat caused widespread flooding and landslide.

The Passi City Council approved the request of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council to declare s state of calamity.

Passi City Mayor Stephen Palmares said the state of calamity declaration has enabled the local government to utilize funds to address the emergency needs of affected residents.

Around 7,000 residents or 3,000 families were affected by flooding from the intermittent rains from May 2 to 4.

A total of 32 out of the 51 barangays in Passi City were affected.

Houses were damaged due to flooding and landslide. Majority of affected residents have returned to damaged homes.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has augmented the city government of Passi in distributing relief goods to affected residents. — Tara Yap
