RCMP have released the names of 16 people who died following a crash in southwestern Manitoba last week.

Mounties held a news conference on Thursday where family members of victims and first responders were invited to place a photo of each of those who died after a semi-trailer truck collided with a bus that was carrying the victims on a day trip to a casino.

The people who died due to the crash were:

  • Louis Bretecher, 81.
  • Margaret Furkalo, 82.
  • Vangie Gilchrist, 83.
  • Ann Hill, 81.
  • Helen Kufley, 88.
  • Arlene Lindquist, 68.
  • Dianne Medwid, 70.
  • Nettie Nakonechny, 87.
  • Shirley Novalkowski, 76.
  • Frank Perzylo, 82.
  • Rose Perzylo, 80.
  • Jean Rosenkranz, 82.
  • Donna Showdra, 79.
  • Lillian Stobbe, 73.
  • Patsy Zamrykut, 88.
  • Claudia Zurba, 87.

Family members walked slowly across the room, clutching a large photo of someone they loved who died in the crash, before placing it on display alongside the other victims’ pictures.

Supt. Jeff Asmundson, Manitoba RCMP west district commander, thanked the victims’ families for attending the news conference to share details about their loved ones “while enduring unimaginable loss.”

“Hearts are broken, families are grieving,” he said, pausing as his voice quivered with emotion. “A community is feeling immeasurable loss.”

Manitoba Premier Heather Stefanson and Dauphin Mayor David Bosiak were also at the news conference at Credit Union Place in Dauphin, the western Manitoba city that was home to most of those on the bus.

The announcement came one day after a 16th person injured in the crash north of Carberry, Man., succumbed to her injuries. RCMP said Wednesday a woman who survived the collision last Thursday died in hospital this week.

The death toll from the crash near Carberry, a community about 160 kilometres west of Winnipeg, is now the same as in the 2018 Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team bus crash in Tisdale, Sask.

The Manitoba crash happened when a semi-trailer truck collided with a bus carrying 25 people, mostly seniors from Dauphin, about 150 kilometres north of Carberry, shortly before noon on June 15.

RCMP have said the bus was going south down Highway 5 and crossing eastbound lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway near Carberry when it was hit by the truck.

Fifteen people died at the scene and 10 from the bus were rushed to several different Manitoba hospitals. Of the nine who remain in care, five are women and four are men.

Four of those patients remained in critical care as of Wednesday, according to Shared Health, which co-ordinates health-care service delivery in the province.

Investigators believe the semi driver had the right of way in the crash. The driver was released from hospital last week and has been assisting with the investigation, RCMP said.

A vigil is planned Thursday night in Dauphin.
