LEGAZPI CITY: The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said that Mayon Volcano may explode anytime as it continues to show signs of unrest.
Paul Alanis, Phivolcs resident volcanologist in Bicol, said that the alert level was raised from 1 to 2. He warned the public not to enter the six-kilometer permanent danger zone.
The agency said that there had been an increase in rockfall and the volcano’s dome continues to swell.
Rockfall increased in frequency from an average of five events a day to 49 as of June 5.
Low-level volcanic earthquakes, ground deformation and frequent rockfall events indicate unrest driven by shallow magmatic processes that could eventually lead to phreatic or magmatic eruption, the agency said.
Alanis urged aviation authorities to advise pilots not to fly too close to the volcano’s summit as ash from any sudden eruption can be hazardous to aircraft. — Rhaydz Barcia
