In an advisory issued Friday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said a relatively “weak but continuous” volcanic tremor has been recorded by at least fifteen seismic stations of the Taal Volcano Network since 6:52 a.m. on Friday.

“The event was accompanied by increased thermal anomalies on the northern portion and upwelling of volcanic fluids in the Taal Main Crater,” said Phivolcs.

Apart from these developments, Phivolcs said they have also observed an uptick in the volcano’s sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission in the past two weeks averaging at least 5,360 tonnes per day.

Alert level 1 is maintained over Taal, but state seismologists said if current low-level activity worsens or changes in monitored parameters are observed, this may be raised to Alert Level 2.

Under Alert Level 1, steam-driven or phreatic explosions, volcanic earthquakes, and minor ashfall may possibly threaten areas within the Taal Volcano Island (TVI).

“Entry into TVI, Taal’s Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ), especially the vicinities of the main crater and the Daang Kastila fissure must remain strictly prohibited,” Phivolcs stressed. — Charie Mae F. Abarca
