Adamson flaunts new ace setter

NO longer a fledgling, the former backup setter of the Adamson Lady Falcons has developed broad wings and is ready to take flight.

With her fine distributing and playmaking skills, Angelica Alcantara seized the Best Setter award in the recently concluded Shakey’s Super League (SSL) National Invitationals.

Alcantara, who was a reserve player in UAAP Season 84 and played a supporting role to Louie Romero in Season 85, credited her teammates and the Adamson coaching staff led by JP Yude for helping her turn the corner.

“I’m very thankful for the award but I wouldn’t be able to get it if not for my teammates and coaches. I’m really thankful but I didn’t expect to win it, I just did my best every game,” said Alcantara, who will likely start for the team in UAAP Season 86 next year with the departure of Romero.

.”I’m really thankful because he [coach JP] trusts me wholeheartedly. He doesn’t took me out even during times when I’m rattled on the court.”

Alcantara not only won the Best Setter plum at the SSL National Invitationals, she also emerged as the runner-up for the Most Valuable Player award which went to La Salle’s Shevana Laput.

She likewise led the rebuilding Lady Falcons team to a runner-up finish in the tournament after losing to heavy favorite La Salle in the winner-take-all game three of the SSL finals.

“I just motivate myself everyday so I could realize my potential, my skills,” said Alcantara. “Coach always say that we always train so there’s nothing we should be afraid of.”

Yude, meanwhile, praised Alcantara for being a coachable player.

“The good thing about ‘Ange’ is that she always listens to our instructions. Sometimes I let her make her own decisions, but sometimes I guide her because she still has so much to learn with her setting. We’re trying to develop her to be a creative setter,” said Yude.

“With her Best Setter award, it’s a good confidence-booster for her. This is a good experience for her.”
