Phivolcs observes ‘very light’ smog around Taal Lake

Phivolcs said that the smog around the Taal Volcano island is “concentrated” and not scattered in other areas.

“As of 7:30, medyo concentrated naman around the lake and the volcano island so medyo hindi pa dapat ito kumakalat pa (As of 7:30, it is moderately concentrated around the lake and volcano island that is why it should have not scattered yet),” said Phivolcs Science Research Specialist Jerome De Lima in a phone interview with the Manila Bulletin.

Phivolcs also said that there is no volcanic earthquake being recorded while “moderate” degassing was observed at the maximum height of 900 meters from the Taal volcano drifting to the Northeast and North-Northeast.

“Kumpara sa noong mga nakaraang araw na may vog tayo na voluminous ‘yung degassing ng bulkan, ngayon naman medyo mas mahina (Compared to past days that we have vog when the degassing was voluminous, as for now, it was lesser),” De Lima added.

Phivolcs also said that the smog over Luzon may be “hindered” by the occurrence of rains on Sept. 22.

However, Phivolcs did not rule out the possibility of volcanic smog advising the community around the volcano island to be prepared. — Lizst Torres Abello
