PH-UK Friendship Day highlighted by young classical singer’s show

Marking Philippines and British Friendship celebrations is a concert by young classical singer Luca Brugnoli, a 13-year-old recognized as BBC’s Best Young Male Chorister of 2022.

Luca is slated to perform at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium in RCBC Plaza on November 22.

Performing with Luca is Steinway & Sons Artist and Global Ambassador Dominic Ferris.

Titled “Luca in Concert: A Special RP – UK Friendship Presentation,” the show is billed as a “hearfelt musical journey” that will also feature young British dancer Darcey Redman and young Philippine Soprano Regina Saban.

But it will be Sussex-born Luca who will headline the RP-UK Friendship celebration.

Luca started singing at the age of 6, going on to perform with the world-renowned Libera Boys Choir.

But it was last year at the annual BBC Young Chorister of the Year competitions that he captured the hearts and ears of UK fans of classical choral music.

In that competition, Luca shined as he performed the requisite Christmas tune and sacred song. The BBC has been holding the competition since 1986.

Luca shared that he “loves to put a smile on people’s faces,” and that he “loves to sing (as) it gets all the emotions out at once.”

He also revealed that he was born 13-weeks premature and that singing was meant to strengthen his lungs.

“It was either swimming or singing that I had to do and we chose singing,” Luca shared.

Luca released his first album “Rise Up” early this year and that record’s track list includes classical and crossover songs. There’s the title track (“Rise Up”) and classic tunes like “Ave Maria” and “Pie Jesu” as well as more modern hits like  “The Rose,” “Fields of Gold,” “Vincent,”  “Both Sides Now” and more.

The album is available on all popular streaming platforms.

Proceeds from “Luca in Concert: A Special RP – UK Friendship Presentation” will support the underprivileged children and scholars of the National Music Competitions for Young Artists Foundation, Inc. (NAMCYA). — Punch Liwanag
