Rainy Christmas poised for Luzon, fair elsewhere

It’s going to be a rainy Christmas weekend in most parts of Luzon, the state weather bureau said, as the strong amihan or northeast monsoon as well as the shear line continue to prevail.

Most of southern Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, however, will experience generally fair weather with possible isolated thunderstorms, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said.

Weather forecaster Benison Estareja said there was a low chance of a weather disturbance until the end of the year.

PAGASA said there will be moderate to heavy rains (50-100 mm) today (Dec. 23) in mainland Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora, and the northern portion of Quezon including Polillo Islands.

On Christmas Eve (Dec. 24), there will be moderate to heavy rains (50-100 mm) in Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, Apayao, Quirino, Isabela and Aurora.

“Under these conditions, flooding and rain-induced landslides are possible, especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards as identified in hazard maps,” PAGASA said.

The weather bureau advised the public to monitor official rainfall warnings, especially those in highly susceptible areas.
