The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) is intensifying its tax efficiency by actively reaching out to business owners to discuss their tax responsibilities, with the goal of enhancing its collection performance for the year.

The Nationwide Tax Compliance Verification Drive (TCVD), which runs from Jan. 18 to 19, is an initiative where the agency deployed BIR officers throughout the country to visit establishments and offices to discuss with taxpayers their tax obligations.

“Our 2024 mission is centered on excellent taxpayer service. This nationwide TCVD is about having a conversation with taxpayers to improve their understanding of BIR requirements,” BIR Commissioner Romeo D. Lumagui Jr. said in a statement.

“This TCVD is a pivotal step in achieving the goal of excellent taxpayer service by incorporating a grassroots approach. We are taking the technical concept of taxation to the doors of ordinary Filipinos, while communicating through a layman’s point of view,” he added.

The activity’s primary goal is to assist taxpayers in fulfilling their obligations to the government, wherein the BIR examiners will guide taxpayers during compliance verification checks, the BIR commissioner said.

As of November 2023, the BIR has seen an improvement in its tax collection performance at P2.34 trillion, up by 8.6 percent from P2.16 trillion in 2022.

For this year, the government eyes to collect P3.046 trillion in taxes, which is 15.44 percent higher than the P2.64 trillion goal last year.

Moreover, the BIR said that the scope of the activity covers business establishments to ensure that they are well informed about their tax obligations.

“Taxation is for everyone. It was not meant to be understood only by a few people. Para po ito sa lahat ng tao. Maasahan niyo po na ang BIR ay kaakibat niyo sa pagintindi ng konseptong ito,” Lumagui said.

[Taxation is a concept meant for everyone, not just a select few. It applies to all people. You can rely on the BIR to stand by you in comprehending this concept.]

The BIR chief said that taxpayers are encouraged to have an open communication with the government on tax awareness and education, which will ensure tax compliance and contribute to the country’s economic development. — Xander Dave Ceballos
