PH to host World Dragonboat Championships Oct. 28-Nov. 4

Leonora Escollante, president of the Philippine Canoe, Kayak Federation (PCKF), revealed that the Philippines secured the hosting rights after a unanimous decision by top officials of the International Canoe Federation (ICF).

“It’s tough to bid for the world (championship) hosting, but they love to do it in the Philippines to see its beauty and experience the world-famous hospitality of the Filipinos,” said Escollante.

Several other countries initially presented their proposals but ultimately gave way to the Philippines, famous for its natural beauty and renowned Filipino hospitality.

Escollante said ICF President Thomas Konietzko formally endorsed the Philippines in a letter sent to national federations, expressing the organization’s wholehearted support for PCKF’s efforts.

Konietzko emphasized that the decision to award the hosting rights to the Philippines resulted from PCKF’s exceptional dedication to the development and promotion of Dragon Boat racing within the country.

“The International Canoe Federation wholeheartedly supports PCKF in its endeavor to host the 2024 ICF Dragon Boat World Championships. We believe that this event will not only exemplify the competitive spirit of athletes worldwide but also contribute significantly to the continued growth and popularity of Dragon Boat racing on a global scale,” said Konietzko in the formal statement of support.

The PCKF is the officially recognized NSA for water paddle sports in the country, including canoe, kayak and dragon boat, by the ICF, Philippine Olympic Committee, and the International Olympic Committee.

As a full member of the ICF, it has consistently demonstrated a commendable commitment to fostering the growth of canoeing and kayaking disciplines, particularly in the dynamic realm of Dragon Boat racing, added Konietzko.

Escollante disclosed that potential venues for the championships include Puerto Princesa and Manila.

The event is expected to draw participation from over 45 countries, featuring competitions in the Open, Women, and Mixed Events across various age categories and distances.

Notably, countries such as Russia, the USA, and Australia have already expressed interest in advance bookings for accommodations, demonstrating their eagerness to practice early and acclimatize to the local weather and water conditions.

Escollante also sees the opportunity to extend invitations to countries participating in the qualifying rounds for the World Games in Chengdu, China, on August 9 and 10, 2025. — Randy Caluag
