14 killed, 3 hurt as truck plunges off cliff in Negros Oriental

BACOLOD CITY – Fourteen persons died and three were injured when a truck plunged off a cliff in Barangay Bulwang, Mabinay, Negros Oriental on Wednesday afternoon, February 21.

The Negros Oriental police identified 10 fatalities – Jun Jun Magos, Peding Desipolo, JR Desipolo, Ric Ric Desipolo, Dodoy Magos, Allan Flores, a certain Lindo, a certain Leo, a certain Jemboy, and a certain Marlon, all residents of La Libertad, Negros Oriental.

Injured were truck driver Antonio Boganotan Toreno and passengers Almer Gargoles Igoogan and Jovanni Flores.

Police Lt. Stephen Polinar, Negros Oriental police spokesperson, said the four other fatalities who were all livestock buyers have yet to be identified.

He said the truck with 17 people on board was on its way to Barangay Dawis, Bayawan City, Negros Oriental to buy livestock animals when Toreno lost control of the vehicle at around 1:45 p.m.

Polinar said that some passengers were pinned down while others were thrown off. He said that 14 of them died on the spot and the injured were taken to a hospital.

He said that search and retrieval operations as well investigation are ongoing.

Police Major Nelson Lamoco, chief of the Mabinay police station, said the truck was traversing a curved road when its brake malfunctioned, causing Toreno to lose control of the streering wheel.

Lamoco said the truck plunged into a ravine which was about 40- to 50-meters deep. The truck turned upside down when it landed at the foot of the ravine.

Lamoco said the injured were brought to the Mabinay Medicare Hospital. He said the area where the truck plunged is accident-prone. — Glazyl Masculino & Calvin Cordova
