Police say one man is dead and another is seriously injured following a head-on collision on the Veterans Memorial Highway Tuesday night on Newfoundland’s Avalon Peninsula.

Members of the Bay Roberts RCMP responded to the crash just before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to a news release. A Subaru Impreza and GMC pickup truck collided head-on, and the truck was on fire when police arrived.

Police and bystanders used snow to fight the fire before fire departments arrived, the release said.

The driver of the Subaru sedan died at the scene, while the truck driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries. The news release did not include the men’s ages.

Veterans Memorial Highway, also known as Route 75, connects a string of communities in Conception Bay North with the Trans-Canada Highway.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash and are seeking any information or dashcam footage from the public. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is also involved in the investigation.
