MANILA, Philippines: Bella Belen struggled offensively in NU’s 25-22, 25-16, 25-15 win over Ateneo, scoring a career-low two points in the UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena on Wednesday, April 10.
Belen, the Season 84 Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player, said her poor scoring performance that saw her hit just one of her 18 attack attempts was due to a lower back pain, which took away her usual steady offensive game.

Photos by Rio Deluvio”It started during my menstruation, the back pain. I wasn’t taking it seriously because it’s normal for a girl to experience back pain during her period,” said Belen.
“When my period was over, the back pain was still there. It’s also my fault because If I feel something painful, I don’t tell our coaches as long as I can feel that I can bear it.”
Belen compensated for her poor scoring performance with nine excellent digs and five receptions albeit that statistics is still low compared to her floor defense numbers this season.
“For me, regardless if you’re in pain or not, it’s not an excuse to play terribly. I need to find a way to contribute. If I can’t help offensively, I was going to help on the defensive side of things.”
Belen’s subpar scoring performance, however, was hardly an issue for the Lady Bulldogs who ran rings around the Blue Eagles after a competitive first set.
Alyssa Solomon led the way with 23 points and eight digs and Vange Alinsug notched 15 points and 11 receptions.
Belen, whose Lady Bulldogs elevated to a 9-2 record, is grateful that her teammates got her back.
“We have each other’s back. Knowing that I’m struggling in the attack part, ate Aly (Solomon) was telling me ‘You can do it Belle, we’re here to support you.’ Vangie and Camila (Lamina) was saying the same thing,” shared Belen.
“It’s good to see my teammates having a good game especially ate Aly. It’s good to see my teammates peaking especially with the elimination round nearing to a close.”
