Benilde, Perpetual move closer to NCAA volleyball titles

MANILA – College of Saint Benilde outplayed Letran, 25-21, 25-15, 25-14, in the opener of the NCAA Season 99 women’s volleyball best-of-three title series at FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City on Sunday.

Michelle Gamit and Gayle Pascual scored 14 points each while Zamantha Nolasco added 12 points as the Lady Blazers moved within a win of a third straight title.

Skipper Jessa Dorog had nine points, 13 digs and five receptions.

Gia Marcel Maquilang scored 10 points and Marie Judiel Nitura added nine points for the Lady Knights, who will try to keep their bid alive for a first title in 25 years in Game 2 on May 26, also at the San Juan venue.

Game 3, if necessary, will be on June 1.

“Basta kami, may isa pang game para magtrabaho pa ulit dahil pwede matalo din, pwede magka-problema so kailangan may ayusin pa (For us, we still have one more game to work on because we can still lose, we can have problems, so we need to fix it),” CSB coach Jerry Yee said after the match.

University of Perpetual Help also moved closer to retaining the men’s title after surviving Emilio Aguinaldo College, 24-26, 25-20, 27-25, 25-19.

Reigning Most Valuable Player Louie Ramirez scored 23 points to go with 23 excellent receptions for the Altas, who are eyeing a fourth straight title and ninth in 12 seasons.

Jefferson Marapoc contributed 20 attacks and one ace followed by Kobe Tabuga, who had 16 points, including five blocks.

Ervin Patrick Osabel led the Generals with 18 attacks and three blocks.  Jean Malanum (PNA)
