MANILA – The Philippines and Malaysia are marking 60 years of diplomatic relations, committing to enhanced cooperation in the years to come.

The establishment of diplomatic relations between the two nations began in 1959 when the Philippine delegation was established in Kuala Lumpur and was formally instituted as a consulate on May 18, 1964.

Since then, the Philippines and Malaysia have maintained a steadfast commitment to mutual respect and cooperation.

Both countries continue to work together to enhance bilateral ties, contributing to peace, regional stability, and mutual prosperity, according to a statement by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).

To commemorate the milestone, the Philippine Embassy in Kuala Lumpur launched earlier the 60th anniversary logo that incorporates sampaguita and bunga raya, the national flowers of the Philippines and Malaysia, respectively.

The DFA said the logo symbolizes the friendship of both nations and their intertwined history, culture, and heritage as brothers and sisters within the Southeast Asian region.

The logo was designed by Filipino engineer Jayven Villamater and was selected by a panel of judges among 54 entries submitted by Filipino and Malaysian contestants.

The Philippine Embassy is organizing a year-long celebration to mark the milestone, which started with the event entitled “Islam: Weaving Stories and Art in the Philippines” held at the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia on May 16. — Joyce Ann L. Rocamora (PNA)
