Sex, adventure, white hair

“Raiders of the Lost Ark” first hit the screens 42 years ago in June of 1981. The world fell in love with the archaeologist, professor and adventurer Indiana Jones.

Now the fifth and likely final outing of Harrison Ford as Dr. Jones, “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” has hit the big screen. Ford is now 80 and, at least for a while, had said he didn’t “feel it was necessary to do another one” after the fourth installment, 2008’s “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.”

It’s no secret reviews have been mixed. I agree with the plot having a lot of holes and being quite convoluted. It involves the quest for an artifact that comes in two parts to operate. As with other films using the same plot device, these parts shift in ownership from the bad guys to the good guys. It also involves time travel.

The ingredients of an Indy movie are all there: that signature score by John Williams, chases on planes, trains and automobiles, Nazis, and, along with the history and scholarship, an element of mysticism thrown in. There’s a lot of action, but much of it takes place at night or in dark settings, so it’s hard to keep track of exactly what’s going on.

New faces to the franchise include Phoebe Waller-Bridge as Indy’s goddaughter, Helena Shaw, Mads Mikkelsen as Nazi scientist (who also believes in woo woo) Jürgen Voller, and a criminally underutilized Antonio Banderas.

Fans of Indiana Jones should be happy to see him again and have an idea of how things are wrapped up for him. But if you’re looking for the excitement, thrill, humor, wonder and magic of the original or the first three films, that remains the elusive artifact.

The second season of “And Just Like That,” the follow-up to the late ’90s and early 2000s hit, “Sex and the City,” started on HBO GO last week with two episodes and one new episode dropping every week on Fridays.

After some settling in and a few cringe moments at the start of the first season, the show seems to find more of its footing and starts off with a sex montage (except for one character) and then goes more into the women’s (now six of them) relationships—beginnings, break-ups and dealing with issues in the working ones.

The fashion, hair and make-up are all still science fiction to me, but for a diversion and celebration of women’s friendship and visibility, it still works.

I guess the recent week in pop culture has shown, you’re never too old to go and get it. Just try not to get injured.
