MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC) signed yesterday a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to help curb child abuse through the Makabata Helpline 1383.

The hotline is a mechanism developed by CWC that provides a platform for children to report any form of violence, abuse and exploitation.

Grave cases of child abuse and exploitation are then referred to appropriate agencies for legal measures.

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla said that the DOJ, as the head of the Committee on Special Protection for Children, is responsible for the investigation and prosecution of cases involving child-related laws.

CWC Undersecretary Angelo Tapales said the council and the DOJ will “complement, supplement, or cooperate with other existing hotlines to ensure that wherever a child, a guardian or a concerned citizen calls, the concern of the child will be resolved.”

Since the Makabayan Hotline 1383 was launched in November 2022, the CWC has partnered with members of the private sector and entered into MOUs with other government agencies.
