Senator Francis Tolentino has called on newly-elected barangay officials in the country to retain the barangay health workers (BHWs) currently serving in their community.
Tolentino pointed out these BHWs already acquired extensive knowledge and skills in their given field.
They also play a crucial role in managing community health during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“If I were to be asked, I would definitely push for the inclusion of BHWs in our national health care system,” Tolentino said in his program at NET 25.
“Retaining these BHWs will allow for continuity in community health care services and shielding BHWs from political discrimination and undue pressure,” he stressed.
The senator said newly-elected officials who opt to replace the BHWs in their jurisdiction should provide a longer transition period.
Likewise, he said the new health workers who will be serving should be able to finish their training before assuming their duties and responsibilities.
