Eala climbs to career-best WTA rating of 176

Her World Tennis Association ranking has reached another new high of 176 and her cash incentives are now $36,392.

The 18-year-old Eala stands to earn more, now that she is in the quarterfinal round of the $40,000 Trnava leg of the International Tennis Federation World Tour in Slovakia.

Eala, who is set to face Anastacia Guerva, reached the quarterfinal phase after hurdling Lina Gjorcheska of North Macedonia, 6-4, 6-2.

She is also in the doubles’ semifinals with Turkish teammate Zeynep Sonmez after they prevailed over Russian Ilona Georgiana Ghioroai and Czech partner Aneta Kucmova, 5-7, 6-3, 10-5.

A day earlier, Eala turned back Anna Bondar, 6-3, 6-1, in the first round.

A week ago, Eala earned $1,543 and moved up to no. 184 in the WTA rankings when she made it to the quarterfinals, but lost to Bondar, 4-6, 7-6 (3), 1-6, in the $75,000 International Tennis Federation world tour in Porto, Portugal.

To make it to the round of eight, Eala eased out Katarina Zavatska of Ukraine, 6-0-6-3.

Eala now has a total earnings of $199,401, or more than P11.173 million since she started her professional career back in 2020.

Eala’s biggest payoff came following her stint in Abu Dhabi and in the Mubadala Open when she bowed out of contention in the round of 32, taking a 6-7 (4), 1-6 setback to Magda Linetter of Poland.

She took home $9,820, or more than P550,000 just from that single game. — Peter Atencio
