3 dead, several hurt as collapsed tree hits shanties in Manila

Three died, including a two-year-old child, and several others were injured after a tree collapsed due to heavy rains and fell on shanties along Estero de Magdalena in Binondo, Manila on Thursday morning, May 18.

The Bureau of Fire and Protection identified the fatalities as Edcel Lansiola, 42; John Mark Portillo, 2; and Jomar Portillo, 28.

According to The Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, three people were trapped inside the collapsed houses as of 3:16 am

Rescue efforts were immediately launched to save the trapped victims and the rescue team was able to extricate everyone by 7:40 am.

At least five individuals were injured in the said incident, the BFP said.

The city government of Manila is coordinating with the Manila Department of Social Welfare to provide assistance to the victims and their families. — Jaleen Ramos
