The citizens of the world eagerly await the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III today, May 6, 2023. With this, the Filipino nation, represented by the attendance of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and the First Lady, sends its warmest felicitations to the members of the monarchy and the people of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth on this momentous occasion.

His Majesty is a passionate advocate for various causes such as environmental conservation and sustainable development. In the run-up to the coronation, observers have noted the “eco-friendly” theme, from the invitation’s design, the upcycling of ceremonial robes, to the symbolic gifts, with the British press dubbing him as the “Green King.”

The pomp and pageantry associated with coronations will be given a modern green twist — with King Charles III ordering not to make new garment pieces for his own crowning. In fact, as symbolic gifts to mark the occasion, primary schools in the UK will receive 200,000 packets of seeds for children to scatter in green spaces, reflecting the King’s interests in nature as shown in his 1.6-hectare wildflower meadow at his Highgrove home in western England.

In a statement from Buckingham Palace, the coronation ceremony will “take place at Westminster Abbey in London, and will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury.” The ceremony today will also see His Majesty King Charles III crowned alongside The Queen Consort.

The coronation, Buckingham said, will “reflect the monarch’s role today and look towards the future, while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry.”

Aside from his green advocacy, His Majesty is also a tireless champion for the arts and humanities, and a steadfast defender of human rights and social justice. Through his work with various charitable organizations (he has established 20 including The Prince’s Trust, The Prince’s Foundation, among others) and advocacy groups, he has shown a commitment to address the root causes of poverty and inequality. Prior to being king, he was known for his long and steady service as Prince of Wales for nearly six decades.

In these tumultuous times, the King’s coronation reminds us that following tradition and honoring legacies still matter, as these symbolize respect, stability, and order. With a television and online audience projected to reach billions of people around the globe, each move and statement from the King will reverberate with meaning and significance.

As we celebrate the coronation of His Majesty, we are also reminded of the strong bonds of friendship and cooperation that exist between our two nations. For centuries, the Philippines and the UK have shared a rich history, marked by moments of triumph and accomplishments, sometimes with grief, such as during the passing of the late Queen Elizabeth II, and with solidarity during the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic when Filipino nurses stood in the frontlines. Our ties run deep, with various cultural, economic, and political exchanges.

Under the leadership of His Majesty King Charles III, we look forward to a future filled with hope and optimism, knowing that his advocacies for a sustainable planet will be sustained and strengthened. May his reign be marked by prosperity, peace, and progress, and may he continue to inspire those who look up to him for guidance.
