2 to 3 motives possible in journalist’s shooting – QCPD chief

POLICE are looking at two to three motives into the shooting of a photojournalist.

BGen. Nicolas Torre 3rd, Quezon City Police Department director, said in a radio interview on Friday that Rene Joshua Abiad may have enemies, based on what they have seen on his social media account.

“There are two to three motives, we do not discount any possibilities… we saw in his Facebook page that he may have enemies,” Torre said in Filipino.

Abiad was still able to use his Facebook account on the day of the incident, showing him at a hotel in Parañaque City. Torre confirmed that he and his family were “stay-cationing.”

The police chief, however, did not specify what these motives were, but said the shooting could be job-related since he was tagged as a witness by the Presidential Task Force on Media Security and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency. He did not elaborate.

He also said the QCPD was not discounting that the shooting may have been a case of “mistaken identity”.

Torre said four people in the Abiad vehicle were injured, after shots were fired outside their home in Barangay Masambong, Quezon City at 3:50 p.m. He said three to five suspects were involved.

He had also said that the suspects used a.45 caliber rifle in the shooting.

Torre said they were confident that the case would be solved, citing a closed circuit television (CCTV) footage outside the Abiad family home that could help in tracing the suspects, who fled the scene. The victims were brought to the Capitol Medical Center.

The QCPD confirmed in a Facebook post on Friday that Torre had ordered a thorough investigation and a continuous manhunt against the suspects. Torre had also urged the public to provide information to the nearest police station.  — Aric John Sy Cua
