Defending champion Nueva Ecija flaunted its depth and strength again in a 94-72 rout of Negros on Friday in the OKBet-Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) at the Baliwag Star Arena in Bulacan.
The Rice Vanguards allowed the Muscovados to surge ahead, 22-2, before slowly working their way back to gain control of the game and notch their 14th win in 15 games.
Nueva Ecija coach Jerson Cabiltes shuffled his 15 players at will, only one of whom failed to score, with prized acquisition Sherwin Concepcion, formerly of Oriental Mindoro, showing the way with 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists to earn best player of the game honors.
Kemark Carino, a 6-foot-9 acquisition from Muntinlupa, also made his presence felt for the Rice Vanguards with eight points, including a triple, in 12 minutes of play.
Negros tumbled to 5-11 as only Jum Manzo and Bernie Bregondo found their range with 19 and 14 points, respectively.
The MPBL visits the Bataan People’s Center in Balanga on Saturday with a triple bill pitting Bacolod against Iloilo at 4 p.m., Zamboanga against Rizal at 6 p.m., and Imus testing Bataan at 8 p.m.
