An Airbus A321-200 utilized by several airlines for commercial flights was converted into a freighter and was inducted this week at the Teleport headquarters in Malaysia.
Teleport, the logistics venture of Capital A Berhad, formerly known as AirAsia Group Berhad, said its first A321 Freighter (A321F) will “strengthen its position as the market leader in terms of most air cargo volume by tonnage across Southeast Asia, as certified by the World ACD.”
The A321F powered by CFMI engines, was the first of three A321Fs that was delivered this year. Seven others freighters are expected to be delivered in 18 months.
The aircraft which was built in Hamburg, Germany in 2001 was leased by several airlines – Volare Airlines, a Mexican and international partners; German airlines LTU; AirBerlin; Condor Airlines also a German company; Portuguese company White Airways; Galistair Malta and later converted into a freighter by BBAM Malaysia in December 2021 before it was turned over to Teleport in June 2023.
The A321F will further strengthen Teleport’s largest air logistics network in Southeast Asia by adding more skidded capacity to the existing passenger belly network, AirAsia said.
The freighter addresses the growing demand of key emerging production and manufacturing hubs within the region with the ability to move goods into primary and secondary cities across Southeast Asia.
The A321F can fly in and out of any destination covered by AirAsia’s six airlines (AirAsia Cambodia, Thai AirAsia, Indonesia AirAsia, Philippines AirAsia, AirAsia X and Thai AirAsia X) across Southeast Asia with a maximum cargo payload of 27 tons or 27,000 kilograms.
Teleport currently serves the top 15 global freight forwarders as well as three of the largest marketplaces in Southeast Asia – Shopee, Lazada and Zalora. — Benjie Vergara
