TOURISM Secretary Christina Garcia-Frasco takes a break with her family starting this week and her undersecretary for Legal and Special Concerns Mae Elaine Bathan has been designated officer-in-charge, according to an advisory from the department on Tuesday.

“The application for the leave of the Secretary was filed and received by the Office of the President on May 9, and this was approved on May 23, 2023,” according to the Department of Tourism (DoT) Office of Public Affairs and Advocacy.

The DoT has not disclosed the effectivity of Bathan’s appointment as OIC, as well as the duration of Frasco’s vacation overseas, which includes taking it with her husband, Cebu 5th District Rep. Vincent Franco Frasco.

Bathan is also a law professor at the University of San Jose Recoletos in Cebu City. She was also named Young Lawyer of the Year in 2017.

Before Frasco’s leave, the DoT was involved in a scandal over a bogus promotional video that misrepresented the country’s tourist destinations.

The DoT has since withdrawn the campaign and terminated the contract with the advertising company.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has said that he continues to have faith in Frasco and was satisfied with the way she handled the fiasco. — Moises Cruz
