Tagle sets new record in secondary girls archery

NAINA Dominique Tagle of Region 7 (Central Visayas) posted a new 60-meter (m) record in secondary girls archery in the 2023 Palarong Pambansa at the STI Gold Toe Archery Center in Barangay Barangka, Marikina City on Thursday, August 3.

Despite the intermittent rain and the muddy ground, Tagle scored 327 points to win her fourth gold medal in the tournament.

Tagle topped the previous high of 321 points set by Charmaine Villamor of the Cordillera Administrative Region in 2018. Chrisha Mae Merto, also from Central Visayas, scored 321 points in 2019.

A Grade 12 student at Siliman University, Tagle also ruled the 30-m, 50-m, and the 1440 round (overall).

“I prepared by training and making sure that I’m in the right head space for this competition. I trained a lot,” Tagle told reporters.

“It’s very rainy, very muddy and the environment affects a lot of our shots but I feel like as long as we have the right spirit, we’ll be fine. It bothered me but I recovered. We were told that there will be storm but I didn’t expect the mud.”

Venice Garcia of the National Capital Region (NCR) claimed the silver medal in the 60m with 313 points while Faith Novesteras settled for the bronze with 312 points.

Tagle and Garcia, meanwhile, switched places in the secondary girl’s 70-m distance, a debuting event in the Palarong Pambansa.

Garcia set the standard in 70 m with 310 points to win the gold as Tagle only scored 306 points to take home the silver.

Denelyn Villagracia of Region 5 (Bicol) bagged the bronze medal with 301 points.

NCR’s Ivo Enot, Jalil Taguinod, Ivan Radovan, Antonio Parto, who posted the new boys secondary 200-m medley relay record also on Tuesday, reset the meet mark in the 400-m medley relay to 4:00.7 on Thursday.

In the boys secondary discus throw, Airex Gabriel Villanueva of Western Visayas also established a new record with a throw of 42.86 meters.
