The collection, dubbed “Hyperballad,” explores exaggerated organic forms and patterns
The best style moments can be seen in magazines and on the red carpet. But nothing beats ones that happened on the runway. A testament to that was actress Nadine Lustre’s appearance on the runway of BYS Fashion Week 2023. On its first day, the fashion festival presented the works of local fashion label Rafa Worldwide, led by designer Raf Villas. The collection, Dubbed “Hyperballad,” was closed by the “Deleter” star.
Fresh from Paris Fashion Week, Nadine wore the brand’s sultry red piece with fringes and intricate beading. The look captured the core of the “Hyperballad” collection, which explores exaggerated organic forms and patterns.
According to Raf, the collection is all about embracing one’s true self despite societal norms. It also reflects the designer’s journey growing up as a queer individual in Angono, Rizal. Its colors of red, black, chrome silver, and gray represent his emotions.
“The collection is a visual narrative that vividly captures the tumultuous journey of growing up, marked by extreme emotions,” the designer said. “It’s a collection that immerses itself in the intense roller coaster of feelings experienced during those formative years… In essence, this collection tells the story of self-acceptance, resilience, and the profound transformation that comes with staying true to oneself, all while celebrating the intensity of those pivotal years of growing up.”
Among the highlighted design elements of the collection are tensioned textiles, sculptural pieces, distressed treatments, fringes, and ornate beading. Raf achieved it by using recycled materials such as magazine pages, denim fabrics, plastic, and upholstery textiles. The result is a line of avant-garde pieces that celebrate the beauty of the human form.
“I aim for the audience to be deeply intrigued and mystified by the pieces on the runway, sparking their creativity and inviting them to think,” Raf said. “My ultimate goal is for each member of the audience to craft their own distinctive interpretation of the collection. I want the experience to be a thought-provoking and imaginative journey, where individuals connect with the designs in a highly personal and meaningful way.”
