NBI to hire 120 agents to beef up anti-cybercrime force

MANILA – The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on Monday said about 120 agents would be hired to beef up its cybercrime force.

“Meron tayong 400 positions for next year, bubuksan (We will open up 400 positions for next year). At ‘yan din ay binigyan ng pondo sa Senado na PHP91 million para sa pasweldo ng manggagawa nating empleyado (It has been alloted PHP91 million for their salary),” NBI Director Medardo de Lemos told reporters during the agency’s 87th anniversary in Manila on Monday.

“Maaari na rin magrecruit ng mga agents . Ang target natin mga 120 agents at meron na rin na binigay na PHP19 million, (We will be recruiting 120 new agents),” he said, adding that the officers will be assigned to anti-cybercrime operations.

De Lemos added that the construction of a new national headquarters would help the agency’s growth in the near future.

A fire gutted a portion of the old building at the corner of Taft Ave. And United Nations Ave. in Manila on the night of Nov. 10.

De Lemos clarified that demolition works by a contractor using welding machines were suspected to have ignited the blaze.

He, meanwhile, said the fire did not affect the NBI’s records and equipment. — Benjamin Pulta (PNA)
