Christmas resides in every heart

On Dec. 25, we are reminded that the true essence of Christmas knows no boundaries. Regardless of who we are or where we find ourselves on this vast tapestry of life, the spirit of Christmas resides within the chambers of our hearts.

Two high-profile conflicts — the Israel-Hamas and the Russia-Ukraine wars, and continuing ethnic violence in about 30 other places, evince a stark reality: Peace remains elusive, even illusory, in these domains.

In a world often divided by differences, Christmas serves as a unifying force. It transcends cultural, religious, and geographical distinctions. The holiday season is a testament to the collective human experience, emphasizing the shared values of love, compassion, and goodwill.

In the Philippines, where the warmth of the sun is rivaled only by the warmth of the people, Christmas takes on a special significance. The Filipino Christmas spirit is not merely an occasion marked by festive decorations and sumptuous feasts; it is an embodiment of the inherent kindness and generosity that define the Filipino spirit.

It is rooted in an abiding faith in the message of salvation. Christ, the Savior, was born to redeem humankind from the bondage of sin. On every currency note under the name Republika ng Pilipinas, a motto is inscribed: “Pinagpala Ang Bayan Na Ang Diyos Ang Panginoon” (Blessed is the nation where the Lord is God).

This is an echo of the clarion call of the angels in Bethlehem: Glory to God in the highest, and peace to all men and women of goodwill!

No matter the challenges faced throughout the year, Christmas has a unique way of bringing people together. Families gather, friends reunite, and communities bond in the spirit of joy and giving. This collective celebration becomes a powerful reminder that, despite the diversity that enriches our society, we are bound by the universal desire for happiness and connection.

Moreover, Christmas is not confined to a specific date on the calendar; it is a perpetual presence in our lives. Filipinos take pride in having the longest Christmas season that starts from the onset of September and lasts until the Santo Niño or Holy Child festivals well into January of the succeeding New Year.

The saying “Christmas is in the heart” resonates deeply, urging us to reflect on the values that define this season and incorporate them into our daily interactions.

In a world that often seems chaotic and divided, the universal message of Christmas is a beacon of hope. It encourages us to embrace our shared humanity and recognize the common threads that weave through the tapestry of our existence.

As we navigate the complexities of our time, let us carry the spirit of Christmas in our hearts throughout the year. By doing so, we contribute to a world where love, understanding, and compassion prevail—a world where this sentiment, holds true not only during the holidays but in every season of our lives:

Whoever you are, wherever you may be, may the spirit of Christmas fill your heart with gladness and serenity!
