UPAAT Christmas Party: A Night of Giving and Sharing

The spirit of caring and sharing was quite evident throughout the evening at the Christmas party of the UP Alumni Association of Toronto (UPAAT). Held on December 8, 2023 at the Kalayaan Cultural Community Centre, the celebration was dedicated to its members who have just moved to Canada, many of whom are international students.

“Christmas can be cold and lonely for those who do not have their loved ones around.  We would like them to feel that they have  family among UP alumni in Toronto, who they can meet and enjoy the holidays with, even for one night,” according to Agnes Manasan, UPAAT president.

With the generous support of Robinsons Land Corporation (RLC) Residences, UPAAT presented the newly-arrived members with Noche Buena boxes to share with their friends and family,  Nems Bacalla, who arrived in Canada this year said, “For someone who’s new in Toronto, events like these are nostalgic and make you feel (like you were) home especially during this season.”

Manasan also took the opportunity to give recognition to donors who have contributed to the Association’s scholarship program through the years. Since 2003, UPAAT has supported the education of more than 20 students in different UP campuses.

Guest of honour Deputy Consul General Kerwin Tate, also a UP alumnus,  noted that the Philippine Consulate General of Toronto and the UPAAT have collaborated on quite a few projects that have benefitted the Filipino community, and this partnership will continue into 2024. The gift-giving may have been the highlight of this year’s Christmas party, but it is only part of the organization’s endeavor to assist fellow UP alumni as they start a new life here in Toronto. They also offer information and referral services, mentorship programs, and seminars on professional accreditation, affordable housing, and other topics that are relevant to newcomers.
