Francis Casey Alcantara opened the year with a bang with a career-high doubles ranking of No. 199 in the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) this week.
The 31-year-old Davis Cup veteran jumped 12 notches from No. 211 last week after coming off a semifinal finish in the Nonthaburi ATP Challenger in Thailand with Japanese partner Kaichi Uchida.
The Cagayan de Oro native, who won the 2009 Australian Open Junior Doubles title, is currently campaigning at the Bangkok Open 2, another Challenger tournament, this time with Chinese Partner Sun Fajing.
The Filipino-Chinese pair is scheduled to meet Great Britain’s Scott Duncan and Canada’s Kelsey Stevenson in the opening round.
This isn’t the first time that Alcantara and Sun are teaming up.
Last year, they competed in several events and came as close to winning the title with a runner-up finish at the Open Castilla y Leon in Segovia, Spain in August. — Kristel Satumbaga-Villar
