MANILA, Philippines — While Jo Koy had a rough night hosting the 2024 Golden Globes, another Filipino-American was drawing attention for much more positive reasons.

Hailee Steinfeld was a revelation at the awards ceremony as she wore a customized pink Prada satin gown with a high sequined beading neckline, a fitted skirt, an open back with a bow, and a dainty train.

The actress completed the look with sheer black opera gloves and pointed-toe heels, making her look like a modern pink version of Audrey Hepburn from “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” topped by Boucheron diamond accessories.

While on the red carpet, E! News’ Chief Correspondent Keltie Knight brought up rumors that she and Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen — who she began dating last May 2023 — might be getting engaged soon.

Steinfeld, however, silently evaded the question, prompting Knight to ask instead about the lack of engagement ring, to which Steinfeld showed instead a deer-shaped ring she was wearing outside her right glove.

“I got a cute little doe happening,” Steinfeld said, clicking her tongue. “No particular reason other than I thought it was real cute.”

Knight prodded on by asking about attraction to athletic men, but Steinfeld dodged the question with a non-answer which had both women smiling.

During the ceremony, Steinfeld was accompanied by her “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” co-stars Shameik Moore and Daniel Kaluuya in presenting the award for Best Screenplay, which went to French film “Anatomy of a Fall” in a surprise win.

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” was nominated for Best Animated Film, Best Original Score, and the new Cinematic and Box Office Achievement award, but it lost all to “The Boy and the Heron,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Barbie” respectively.

“Oppenheimer” went on to win four other awards including Best Picture – Drama and Best Director for Christopher Nolan. HBO’s “Succession” led television winners with four trophies.

Steinfeld was previously nominated for a Golden Globe in 2017, a Best Actress – Musical/Comedy nod for “The Edge of Seventeen” which went to Emma Stone; coincidentally Stone won the same award again this year for “Poor Things.”

Last year, Dolly de Leon became the first full-blooded Filipino to be nominated for a Golden Globe because of her scene-stealing performance in “Triangle of Sadness.”

Filipino-American actor Darren Criss previously won a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series in 2019 after his heavily-lauded role of Andrew Cunanan in “American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace.”

Other individuals with Philippine heritage that have received Golden Globe nominations include H.E.R. and Robert Lopez, both have gone on to win Oscars. — Kristofer Purnell
