Back-to-back strong quakes jolt Agusan province; damages feared

MANILA, Philippines — Two earthquakes, with magnitudes of 5.8 and 5.2, struck Agusan province on Saturday, while search and retrieval operations persist in the landslide-stricken area of Mindanao.

According to Phivolcs, the stronger quake had its epicenter 5 kilometers southwest of Las Nieves, Agusan del Norte at around 11:22 a.m., with the “weaker” one hitting 10 kilometers southeast of Esperanza, Agusan del Sur at around 1:21 p.m.

On the other hand, the following were intensities were reported in connection with the second quake:

Intensity I (scarcely perceptible)

  • City of Marawi, Lanao del Sur

Phivolcs anticipates damages and potential aftershocks following the magnitude 5.8 quake.

While for the magnitude 5.2 quake, although no aftershocks are currently observed, damages are still a possibility.

State seismologists have not issued any tsunami advisories in response to the reported ground shaking.

Officials of Apex Mining Co. Inc. earlier said that they halted their search and rescue operations in a separate incident of landslide in Maco, Davao de Oro following the two strong quakes. — James Relativo
