Unbeaten Tamaraws roll to UAAP men’s volleyball top spot

MANILA – Far Eastern University (FEU) conquered the University of the East (UE), 25-22, 25-17, 25-15, and rolled to its third straight win to grab the lead in the UAAP Season 86 men’s volleyball tournament at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City on Sunday.

Jose Javelona scored 11 points while Martin Bugaoan had nine attacks and two blocks as the Tamaraws downed the Red Warriors in one hour and 31 minutes.

“Nagpapasalamat din ako kay coach kasi kahit saan akong puwesto ilagay, nakakaya ko and nag-a-adjust talaga ako palagi. Ready talaga ako (I’m also thankful to coach because no matter where I’m placed, I’m always able to cope and adjust. I’m really ready),” Javelona said.

Skipper John Paul Mangahis had 10 points on attacks for UE, which remained winless after three matches.

“Hopefully, this will continue,” FEU coach Eddieson Orcullo said.

FEU will go for 4-0 on March 3 against University of Santo Tomas (UST), which bowed to De La Salle University, 24-26, 25-23, 21-25, 15-25, in the other match.

La Salle tied UST for second at 2-1.

Noel Michael Kampton led the Green Archers with 18 attacks and Vince Gerard Maglinao backed him up with 16 points, including five blocks and one ace.

Josh Ybañez finished with 18 attacks and two aces for the Growling Tigers.

In the women’s division, FEU rallied past UE, 22-25, 25-17, 25-18, 25-27, 15-11, for its second win in three starts.

Gerzel Mary Petallo scored 18 points while Chenie Tagaod added 16 points for the Lady Tamaraws.

Casley Monique Dongalio had 30 points while Kayce Balingit chipped in 12 spikes, three aces and one block for the Lady Warriors (1-2). —  Jean Malanum (PNA)
