La Salle asserts mastery over Ateneo in straight sets

De La Salle asserted its mastery over archrival Ateneo with a 25-12, 25-22, 25-19 victory in the UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball tournament on Saturday, March 2, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

The defending champions regained their bearings to improve their win-loss standings to 3-1 following last week’s defeat against the University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses.

Senior middle blocker Thea Gagate unleashed 15 points built on nine attacks, five blocks and one ace for La Salle, who extended its winning streak over the Blue Eagles to 13th dating from Season 79 in 2017.

.Shevana Laput and reigning Most Valuable Player Angel Canino also spelled the difference for the Taft-based crew with 13 and 10 points.

Ateneo was coming off a morale-boosting victory over University of the Philippines that snapped its six-game losing skid, but failed to sustain that momentum as La Salle banked on its rock-solid defense to frustrate the Blue Eagles.

Lyann De Guzman, who previously tallied a season-high 24 points, had 15 points to show for Ateneo but couldn’t get enough reinforcements to outshine La Salle.

The Blue Eagles skidded to their third defeat in four outings. — Nikole Javier
