MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. condemned on Monday the ambush that claimed the lives of four soldiers in Datu Hofer, Maguindanao del Sur.

The soldiers from the Philippine Army’s 40th Infantry Battalion were on their way to their patrol base when members of Dawlah Islamiya ambushed them along the road in Barangay Tuayan on Sunday morning.

“This despicable act only strengthens our resolve to eradicate terrorism from the region and our entire nation,” Marcos said in a statement posted on X.

“Under my administration, we remain resolute in our pledge to ensure that justice is swiftly served for our fallen heroes,” he added.

In a separate statement, Gen. Romeo Brawner, chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, vowed “to hunt down the perpetrators and neutralize these ruthless killers to finally put a stop to their violent acts that disrupt peace and stability in the region.”

The provincial government of Maguindanao del Sur earlier condemned the deadly attack, which happened on the 6th day of Ramadan.

“This is a clear act of disrespect during the sacred month of Ramadan and goes against the peace advocated by the province,” it said in Filipino.
