SC justices hold dialogue with Filipinos in Japan

The Supreme Court (SC), led by Chief Justice Alexander G. Gesmundo, discussed with members of the Filipino community in Japan issues involving recognition of foreign divorces and hearings via video conference.

The dialogue held last March 6 was arranged by Philippine Ambassador to Japan Mylene J. Garcia Albano at the Philippine Embassy in Tokyo, the SC’s Public Information Office (PIO) said in a statement issued on Wednesday, March 13.

Chief Justice Gesmundo was with Associate Justices Rodil V. Zalameda, Samuel H. Gaerlan, and Jose Midas P. Marquez.

Several cases involving recognition of divorce between a Filipino and her Japanese husband have reached the trial courts and even elevated before the Court of Appeals (CA).  Some of the cases have even reached the SC.

During the dialogue, the PIO said that Chief Justice Gesmundo expressed the SC’s gratitude for bringing the concerns of the members Filipino community.

It said Gesmundo assured “the SC’s unwavering commitment to create responsive changes in the judicial system, as outlined in the Strategic Plan for Judicial Innovations 2022-2027.”
