One dead, over 20 others hospitalized after ammonia leak, fire in Navotas

THE Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) is investigating the death of a resident and hospitalization of over 20 others following an ammonia leak and fire at a cold storage facility late Monday night in Navotas City.

The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), however, said it is still verifying if the death of a 16-year-old boy was related to the ammonia leak at the storage facility on M. Naval Street, Barangay North Bay Boulevard North.

Initial report from BPF-Navotas showed the incident took place past 11 p.m. wherein the storage facility workers rushed to get out of the premises after smelling ammonia.

Even residents living in front of the facility had to evacuate as they all started to experience difficulty in breathing, reports said.

Fire marshal, Supt. Jude delos Reyes, who rushed to the scene, said they were already inside the facility in a bid to check where the leak was coming from but had to step back after a fire broke out inside.

He said the fire was controlled before 2 a.m. Tuesday as they discovered the room where the leak was coming from and managed to close the valves and control it.

The Manila Times tried to reach Mayor John Rey Tiangco but a public information officer said they have yet to release a statement regarding the incident. — Arlie O. Calalo
