20th Toycon a triumph at SMX

The 20th edition of the Philippine Toys, Hobbies and Collectibles Convention successfully ran at the SMX Convention Center from July 7 to 9, with thousands of toy aficionados flocking to the annual, large-scale pop culture event.

More popularly known as Toycon, the much-awaited occasion has evolved from a simple toy buy-and-sell activity at the SM Megamall Meeting Room to a pop culture convention that is comparable to the San Diego Comic Convention in the United States.

On the event’s first day, noted comedian, actor, and musician Michael V. graced the Toycon stage to receive his “Pinoy Pop Culture Icon” award from the organizers.

During a chance interview with The Manila Times Entertainment after his autograph signing session at the GMA Store booth, he described his experience at this year’s Toycon as “unforgettable,” noting that he has been a regular visitor to the convention.

In the “Voltes V Legacy” panel, series director Mark Reyes revealed that the show would be showcased at the SDCC through Dogu Publishing, an imprint of Dark Horse Comics, marking a first for Philippine television.

Reyes stated that the SDCC partnership had been finalized a few weeks prior, but Toycon was chosen as the platform to formally announce the showcase at the global pop culture event.

The proudly Filipino-made adaptation’s supporting cast, led by Liezel Lopez, also appeared on the event’s third day.

Meanwhile, Inaba and Kurata’s presence and meet-and-greet session proved nostalgic among the audience as they shared stories from the filming of their respective shows, which celebrated their 35th anniversary this year.

Incidentally, new-generation Japanese idols Himegotozettaichi, Chicken Blow the Idol, and To Be Radical delivered their first performance in the country at the Toycon stage, captivating the enthusiastic crowd.

Toycon featured a free-entrance Annex at the SM Mall of Asia music hall for the first time, showcasing additional toy displays, panels and activities such as a concert featuring mini-idols and a pet cosplay contest.

Organizers had previously stated that they were prepared for any eventualities at the SMX, especially after issues that surrounded CONQuest 2023, but no untoward incidents occurred, and the ticket lines were effectively managed.

The next Toycon-branded event is scheduled for October 6 to 8 at the Baguio Country Club and in December at the SM Megamall Megatrade Hall.

The 21st Toycon, on the other hand, will take place on June 14 to 16 at the SMX Convention Center Main Halls.
