Sharon Cuneta and daughter Miel encourage Filipinos to dream big

Sharon Cuneta, known as the country’s Megastar, is not just an accomplished performer but also a devoted mother. Her close relationship with her children inspires many since she consistently shares her love and pride for them on her social media accounts.

A compelling testament to her unwavering commitment to her children’s happiness and personal growth is her support for her daughter Miel — her youngest child with former senator Kiko Pangilinan — who courageously came out as queer in June 2022. The situation highlighted the strong bond Cuneta shares with her daughter, fostering a positive and inclusive environment for Miels’ self-acceptance and continuing journey where it matters most at home. The Mega mom’s love and admiration for Miel has always been evident, as she is known to refer to the 18-year-old as her “mini-me.”

This July, this enviable mother-daughter dynamic is spotlighted all the more as Cuneta and Miel are named “Dreamweavers” and brand ambassadors for insurance company Insular Life (InLife). The collaboration aims to amplify both sides’ mission of helping Filipinos lead “A Lifetime for Good.”

Cuneta, who started her showbiz career at just 12 years old, is adamant about securing her children’s future and encourages others to do the same. As a parent, she believes in teaching her children financial literacy to prepare them for the future better.

“It’s actually an honor to me to be part of this and for Miel also. So for me, it’s like a dream come true. It’s synergy. Everything that InLife imparts are the same things I impart to my children.

“It’s always about securing [their] future, making sure you know how to handle the blessings that come your way and not wasting them,” Cuneta said at their official launch.

“Of course, as a parent, I want to secure my children’s future, so I don’t have to worry about what will happen to them when I’m gone. At the same time, [doing this also shows] them how to manage finances and what they will earn because starting young is always best.

“They have the edge of youth and the gift of time. So the sooner they start, knowing how to invest and take care of their money and handle it, the richer they will become.”

The 57-year-old also believes having insurance is the best decision, especially in these uncertain times.

“When I was offered this [endorsement], I just couldn’t say no because we all need a little insurance in our lives, especially when we are no longer in our 20s. So, I consider this a wonderful opportunity and one that I would advise [others to take].

“This is the best time [to get insured] because during the pandemic, it was very difficult for a lot of our kababayan. Why wait for another [crisis]? Get insurance as soon as possible so your loved ones won’t have to worry,” she said.

For her part, Miel said she is eager to spread the company’s message of dreaming big and exploring the good in life among the youth.

“I just turned 18 recently, and I feel like it’s so important to be able to be part of a campaign like this. As a member of the Filipino youth, it is such a great thing. I’m very thankful for the opportunity to be a Dreamweaver,” said one of the Mega daughters.

“The company believes in young Dreamweavers like me as we build our own paths and shape our future. They encourage us to create without fear of judgment or making mistakes and to foster our artistic spirit. I am thrilled to be a part of this movement that celebrates inclusivity and diversity,” she added.

Furthermore, Miel, who just finished high school, has been accepted into her dream college and is keen to learn more about managing her finances.

“I love to draw and paint and make art; it’s probably one of my biggest passions in life. I’m inspired by a lot of things like the experiences of womanhood and being Filipino. One of my biggest dreams in life is to become a successful visual artist, and I’m very glad I’m with InLife. I feel they can help me secure that future that I want so badly,” she expressed.

Indeed, the alignment between InLife and the mom-and-daughter Dreamweavers is evident.

As InLife Executive Chairperson Nina Aguas noted, the pair’s passion for inclusivity, diversity and the future truly resonates with the company’s values. Company President and CEO Raoul Littaua, on the other hand, emphasized the significance of Cuneta and Miel as the perfect advocates.

“Sharon is a household name. To be popular for a year, a couple of years is something. But to become popular, credible and authentic over decades and across generations, that’s truly an achievement,” Littaua acknowledged.

“In the case of Miel, in a couple of years or three years, I think 70 percent of the population of the Filipino people will be made of millennials and Gen Zs. And so if you want someone to speak to that generation, you would want someone who is authentic, who is an achiever, who stands for inclusion and justice, and that is Miel. So we’re very fortunate that Sharon and Miel are very much aligned with InLife and what InLife stands for,” he ended.
