Abrenica brothers can keep each other’s secrets

RESPECT takes on a deeper meaning between brothers Aljur and Vin Abrenica.

Albeit carefree and adventurous during their much younger days, their fraternal closeness even to this day — does not include having to trade stories about their personal lives.

Vin shares what their relationship has been like ever since, “We’re not the type of brothers who’d openly talk about the girls we took out on dates, or describe how exciting — or unpleasant those dates were as the case may be.”

The younger Abrenica attributes it to the fact that his Kuya Aljur simply wants to be our role model, that he’s worthy of emulation.

So consistent was Aljur that he refused to let Vin take a peek into what exactly went wrong in his marriage to Kylie Padilla, “Kuya hardly opened up, and I respected that. I never asked questions.”

In the process, Vin has likewise adopted the same attitude, “I’m also careful not to let him know what’s happening in my life.

“There were instances in the past, however, where I felt the need to seek his advice. Being older, I believe he has a more mature approach in dealing with things.”

Man of few words — this is one outstanding trait of Aljur that makes Vin respect him even more.

Not one to wrongly judge his Kuya for his failed marriage, Vin is well aware of his pain. People just don’t know that despite what happened, Vin ascertains that Aljur is trying his best to be a good, responsible dad to his sons Alas and Axl.

“Except for Father’s Day when Kuya failed to meet up with my nephews because he had a prior showbiz commitment, he made it a point to fetch the kids the following Sunday,” Vin reveals.

Even Aljur told in a separate interview that he’d spend a couple of minutes chewing the fat with Kylie before taking the kids for a weekend getaway.

“What most people also don’t know is that Kylie and I are in constant communication. There isn’t a single time when we don’t talk about the kids,” Aljur was quoted to have said.

It’s also Vin’s wish that people refrain from saying that he’s a far better actor than his Kuya.

“Honestly, I get hurt when people keep saying that. Why? Because he’s my Kuya and I’m his fan! Never have I entertained the thought that I’m ‘better’ than him,” a slightly peeved Vin says.

For Vin’s info, Aljur’s “I’m-not-feeling-well” hackneyed alibi whenever there are media conferences or movie premiere nights is the most common complaint raised by the press attendees.

At times, no personal questions are allowed should Aljur show up at these important events.

In particular, the entire press is anxious for Aljur who might lose the opportunity of getting film assignments one after another because of his alibi.

Apparently, the press is inclined to believe that his no-show is Aljur’s uncanny way of dodging love life-related questions.

Simply put, anything about his girlfriend AJ Raval — the latter’s rumored pregnancy to top it all — seems to make him sick to his stomach.

Expect a tight-lipped Vin, of course.
