Actor Andre Braugher, best known for his role as Captain Raymond Holt in the award-winning series “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” passed away on Monday. He was 61.
Andre’s demise was confirmed by his publicist, Jennifer Allen, to People Magazine.
The award-winning star played Detective Frank Pemberton in another police-related series, “Homicide: Life on Street”, earning his first Emmy win in 1998. His intense performance made him one of the breakout stars of the critically beloved police drama.
Portraying characters on a police task force has become Andre’s niche; his role as Captain Raymond Holt became a fan favorite. Captain Holt’s stoic and no-nonsense personality but a profound sense of humanity made him an instant fan favorite of the show, especially when paired with Andy Samberg’s hotshot Det. Jake Peralta in a scene.
Andre’s first screen role came as a Union solider in “Glory,” in which he played Thomas Searles, a free Black man who joins the first Black regiment.
Following news of his death, tributes began to pour out from Brooklyn Nine-Nine co-stars, Terry Crews, Marc Evan Jackson, Joe Lo Truglio, Dirk Blocker and more.
