MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has designated Police Lieutenant General Emmanuel Peralta as the officer-in-charge of the Philippine National Police (PNP), Malacañang announced on Sunday.

The move comes as the term of General Benjamin Acorda, the country’s top cop, ends today.

Peralta, who is PNP’s deputy chief for operations, will temporarily lead PNP “until a replacement is appointed or until otherwise directed by this office,” according to a memorandum signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin.

Acorda’s tenure was supposed to end in December 2023, but Marcos extended it until March 31, 2024.

Both Peralta and Acorda belong to the Philippine Military Academy’s “Sambisig” Class of 1991.

Peralta previously served as director of Police Regional Office 1 as well as Directorates for Operations, Human Resource and Doctrine Development. — Gaea Katreena Cabico
