The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) deployed a team of doctors, nurses, and teachers to Pag-asa (Thitu) Island in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) to improve community welfare and education in the remote area.
The team is comprised of a doctor, two doctor assistants, a nurse, two nurse assistants, and at least two educators. They arrived in the island last March 18 and their deployment will last for one month.
On March 27 to 28, the medical team, equipped with necessary supplies and expertise, conducted a medical mission to provide comprehensive healthcare services to the residents including consultations, medical treatments, and preventive care measures.
Meanwhile, the deployed educators are focused on promoting holistic learning experiences by facilitating educational programs tailored to meet the diverse needs of students in Pag-asa Island.
“This initiative marks a significant stride in advancing the well-being and educational prospects of residents inhabiting Pag-asa Island and neighboring areas,” the Coast Guard District Palawan said over the weekend.
“The strategic deployment underscores the commitment of the Coast Guard District Palawan to serve marginalized communities, ensuring access to essential healthcare and educational resources despite geographical challenges,” it added.
The PCG said it will now regularly deploy medical teams and educators on the island as part of efforts to improve the living condition of residents there.
Pag-asa Island is the largest of the nine features occupied by the Philippines in the Kalayaan Island Group (Spratly Island). It represents a vital frontier for Philippine sovereignty and community welfare.
